Purworejo Great Mosque is a historical heritage from the period of Islam in Indonesia. The Purworejo Great Mosque is also called the Jami ’Darul Mutaqqim Mosque. This mosque is located in the center of Purworejo city, precisely to the west of Purworejo square. Purworejo Great Mosque is located in Kauman Village, Sindurjan Village, Purworejo District, Purworejo Regency. Around the mosque there are several important buildings, including the residence of the Regent, Purworejo District Government Office, GPIB Church, as well as military prison and military buildings which now function as infantry headquarters 412.

            The history of the founding of the Purworejo Great Mosque is inseparable from the history of Purworejo itself. Purworejo was formerly known as Bagelan which included the Bagelan Residency area. The Bagelan region in the nineteenth century was the region of the Surakarta Kasunanan Great Nagara. The condition of the Bagelan area which was not conducive encouraged the Dutch to reassure the area by asking for assistance to Paku Buwono VI. Paku Buwono VI chose Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Haryo Kusumoyudho as commander to help the Dutch. The Dutch promised KGPH Kusumoyudho if they succeeded they would be appointed as rulers in the Bagelan region.

            KGPH Kusumoyudho was assisted by Raden Ngabehi Resodiwiryo. Resodiwiryo can secure the area in Bagelan well. So he won the trust of KGPH Kusumoyudho to serve as Regent of Tanggung, whose territory is located east of the Bogowonto River. Resodiwiryo then held the title Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung Cokrojoyo.

            After the Diponegoro War was completed the Dutch government requested the entire Bagelan area. This area was made residence under the leadership of Resident A.I. Ruitenback. Then by Commissioner van Sevenhoven, the Bagelan Residency was divided into four kadipaten regions with the dukes of its rulers namely:

The Brengkelan Duchy becomes East Bagelan with K.R. Duke of Cokrojoyo as his regent.
The Semawung Duchy (Semawon) includes South Bagelan, led by K. Duke of Notonagoro Sawunggalih II.
The Karangduwur Duchy includes North Bagelan led by K.R. Duke of Mangunnagoro.
The Ngaran Duchy includes Western Bagelan led by K. Adipati Arung Binang.
K. Duke Cokrojoyo who was appointed as Regent of Brengkelan in 1830 AD changed the name of the Brengkelan Duchy to the Purworejo Duchy with the approval of Commissioner van Lawick van Pabst. After being approved by the new name, K. Duke of Cokrojoyo is famous as K.R. Duke of Cokronagoro I who began to rule in the Duchy of Purworejo in 1831.

During his reign K. Duke of Cokronagoro I held many developments, such as making irrigation canals, duchy buildings, and the Grand Duchy Mosque. The official who was given the task of carrying out the construction of the Kadipaten Mosque was Pepatih Dalem Kadipaten Purworejo named Patih Cokrojoyo. The making of the Purworejo Duchy Mosque began in 1834 AD as stated on the inscription attached to the main door of the mosque. In 1988, by the head of the Purworejo District Office of Religion, Drs. H. Moch. Soeripto and Chairman Takmir KH. Drs. Muh. Ghufron Faqih, Purworejo Great Mosque was named the Great Mosque of Darul Muttaqin Purworejo.

The Purworejo Grand Mosque complex consists of Serambi, Main Room, Mihrab, and several other relics such as pulpits, maxura and drum. One of the uniqueness found in Purworejo Great Mosque is the existence of the drum. That said, the drum in this mosque is the biggest drum in the world. The bedug is named Kyai Bagelan or better known as the Pandawa Bedug. This bedug is made from the base of a giant teak tree from Pandawa Hamlet, Bragolan Village, Purwodadi District, Purworejo Regency. This bedug was made on the advice of Tumenggung Prawiranegara (sister of Tumenggung Cokronagoro I). This biggest drum has a diameter of the front part of 194 cm, the center line of the back 180 cm, a length of 292 cm with a circumference of the front of 601 cm and the back of 564 cm. The skin of this drum was originally made of bull skin, but now it has been replaced with cow leather. The reason this drum is the biggest drum in the world is probably because not all mosques in the world especially outside Indonesia have drum. So it is legitimate if Bedug Kyai Bagelan is still dubbed as the biggest drum in the world.
